Moriba Traoré est né avec l'aiguille dans l'âme. Autodidacte dans l'âme, il a forgé son savoir-faire au fil des années, apprenant auprès de maîtres tailleurs en Côte d'Ivoire, marchant parfois des kilomètres à pied — sans argent pour le transport — pour rejoindre les ateliers où il apprenait son art. Ces années de sacrifice ont sculpté en lui une discipline de fer et une passion inébranlable pour la coupe et la création.
Après avoir ouvert son premier atelier en Côte d'Ivoire — fruit de longues années de labeur — il pose ses valises en Gambie en 2006-2007. Ce pays l'accueille, l'inspire, et lui offre un nouveau terrain pour créer. Il y fonde Chez Djamil, son atelier de couture sur mesure à Bakau New Town, qui devient rapidement une référence dans la région.
Mais c'est en observant la jeunesse gambienne — pleine de talent, mais manquant d'opportunités et de moyens — qu'il prend une décision qui changera des vies. En 2023, il crée la Djamil Academy of Fashion Design (DAFD), une école de mode accessible, inclusive, ancrée dans la réalité africaine. Son objectif : donner à chaque jeune, même celui qui n'a pas les moyens, les outils pour devenir indépendant financièrement grâce à la mode.
Aujourd'hui, avec plus de 40 ans d'expérience à son propre compte et près de 20 ans enraciné en Gambie, Moriba Traoré est bien plus qu'un tailleur. "Fashion is not a trade I chose. It is a passion that chose me."
Moriba Traoré was born with a needle in his soul. Largely self-taught, he built his craft over many years, learning from master tailors in Côte d'Ivoire — sometimes walking miles without money for transport just to reach the workshops where he trained. Those years of sacrifice shaped in him an iron discipline and an unshakeable passion for cutting, pattern-making, and creation.
After opening his first atelier in Côte d'Ivoire — earned through years of hard work — he arrived in The Gambia in 2006–2007. The country welcomed him, inspired him, and gave him new ground to build on. He founded Chez Djamil, his bespoke tailoring atelier in Bakau New Town, which quickly became a trusted name in the region.
But it was watching Gambian youth — full of talent, yet lacking opportunity and resources — that led him to a decision that would change lives. In 2023, he founded the Djamil Academy of Fashion Design (DAFD): an accessible, inclusive fashion school rooted in African reality. His mission: to give every young person, even those with limited means, the tools to become financially independent through fashion.
Today, with over 40 years of experience working independently and nearly 20 years rooted in The Gambia, Moriba Traoré is far more than a tailor. He is a builder — of garments, of minds, and of futures.
